Workshop · Berlin
We make tempeh together and talk about Peranakan cooking and the Chinese-Javanese history behind it.
Tempeh comes from Java. What is less known is how closely its story is tied to tofu, and so to the Chinese families who settled along the coasts of Southeast Asia over centuries. Together with the people already living there, they became the Peranakan: a culture that isn't quite Chinese, nor quite Malay or Javanese, but something of its own.
Fermenta Collective is very excited to invite you to a workshop facilitated by Feydrea & Dey about tempeh, its relation to baba-nyonyah peranakan culture and its fermentation.
📍 think moto, Saarbrücker Str.24 / Haus A, 10405 Berlin
📆 Fr 16/10/2026, 18:00-21:00
One grew up in Indonesia, the other in Singapore, and they share Peranakan roots. For this workshop, they’re bringing their stories and kitchens together.
We are going to have the space for around 3 hours, welcoming you to a small tasting, sharing session and hands-on workshop. During the workshop, we’ll share our memories of tempeh, talk about where it comes from and the many ways it’s made and eaten, and show you how to make it here.
At the end of the evening we would serve you a simple homecooked dinner (all vegan) with two variations of tempeh dishes and a teaser for our workshop in November (Part II of Peranakan Culture on 06/11 - separate signup!). Afterwards we could continue the evening and go to a bar if we want.
You will get home bringing a batch of your first tempeh culture, a small package of starter, a widened knowledge and taste of tempeh - and hopefully with lots of warm feeling. Additionally, a tempeh zine plus starter would eventually be available for purchase.
Did you know tempeh is nominated for UNESCO world intangible heritage in 2026?
